The company came into being at the turn of the twentieth century. In the mid 1880s Karl Benz developed the first automobile with three wheels and called it the Benz Patent Motor car. A few years later Gottlieb Daimler and Whilhelm Daimler created their automobile. It had four wheels. The first Mercedes automobile was introduced in the 1900s.
Daimler and Benz developed an alliance in the mid 1920s and called their new company Daimler-Benz. A three point star inside a laurel was designated as the company symbol. Since the 20s, the name Mercedes-Benz has brought with it a sense of excellence and luxury.
The Mercedes-Benz 170 came out in the 1930s. It came with an independent suspension and cutting edge technology. The 380 and the 540K debuted over the next decade, cementing the luxury reputation of the Mercedes-Benz brand.
State of the art styling and a racing design was offered int he 300 SL of the 1950s. Throughout the decade, Daimler-Benz continued to develop its technology, developing breaking ground safety components. A crumple zone frame was used on the 220 which protected occupants from crash impact in the event of an accident.
The luxurious 600 debuted in the 60s. It was powered by a V8 engine and came with an air suspension system. Not long after the 300 SEL 6.3 rolled out. It offered increased performance and a stronger acceleration to the American car buying public.
In the 70s Mercedes-Benz created its S-Class lineup of sedans and coupes. They came with a long list of luxury components and powerful engines. The company continued to develop its innovative safety equipment over the next decade, and brought out its antilock brakes.
Throughout the decade of the 80s, Mercedes-Benz was able to offer it 190 E model that came with a multilink rear suspension, traction control and airbags. Over the next decade the company created a partnership with AMG, and introduced the C36 AMG in the mid 90s.
